General Information
Heart Lake First Nation # 469 is located approximately 70 kilometers northeast of the Town of Lac La Biche, Alberta and 295 kilometers northeast of Edmonton, Alberta. The First Nation is on a 4496-hectare reserve along the west and north side of Heart Lake. The First Nation is a signatory to Treaty No. 6. The current Indian Register population is approximately 357 with 219 living on reserve.

Historically the Heart Lake First Nation hunted, trapped and fished extensively within their traditional lands to satisfy a range of subsistence, livelihood, nutritional, social, cultural, spiritual and other needs. This lifestyle and means of prosperous survival is no longer possible due to extensive resource development activity in the area. The Heart Lake First Nation is now looking to take advantage of opportunities that are arising through resource development to provide a sustainable future for the Heart Lake community members.

One of the highlights of the First Nation’s economic development is Heart Lake First Nation Construction Ltd. which is a 100% First Nation owned company and held in trust by the Chief on behalf of and for the benefit of the members of Heart Lake First Nation. The First Nation continues to successfully complete many projects and expand their company and build their capacity.

Heart Lake First Nation recognizes the value of working together with industry, and the advantage of creating training and employment opportunities for its members. This includes a number of successful working arrangements with the local oil and gas industry. The First Nation attaches a community contribution to the projects developed to supplement the infrastructure and program costs of the First Nation. Through the successful relationships it has forged in the past, the First Nation has numerous accomplishments through its development projects. The First Nation is continuing its investments in providing services and facilities which will be funded by the business ventures of Heart Lake.
